Twenty minutes drive and open every day except Christmas Day, this is a firm favourite with the grandchildren. The centre takes rescue monkeys from around the world and is a registered charity. Big adventure playground, cafes and some indoor exhibits but you are outside a lot.

If tanks and history are your things, then this is well worth a visit. Twenty minutes away and a good rainy day visit for all age ranges as plenty of indoor things to do and see as well as outdoor. Another recommendation from the grandchildren.

For a dry under foot walk and also mountain biking, then Puddletown Forest is a great place. Lots of trails like those in the picture plus much more challenging bike trails through the forest. It's about 10-15 minutes from the house.
This is a great place to visit. For the dinosaur fans there is the Etches collection www.theetchescollection.org with the "Sea Rex" Pliosaur skull as narrated by David Attenborough. Then the beach and fossil hunting and stone skimming. It's about 35-40 minutes drive
Also worth dropping into Clavell's restaurant opposite - very dog friendly.
If industrial archeology is your thing, especially quarries then the isle of Portland and Tout Quarry Sculpture Park is worth a visit.
It's probably a couple of hours worth of wandering round unless there are activities laid on. See their website www.learningstone.org for that sort of thing. For the old quarry go to https://www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/nature-reserves/tout-quarries
Great view from the top over Chesel Beach.
If you feel the need for a dose of art and culture, then a visit to the local Tincleton Gallery is recommended. There is a permanent display of local artists, both paintings and sculpture.
In addition, music evenings are held throughout the year. These are detailed on the gallery website www.tincletongallery.com
Address is The Old School House, Tincleton, DT2 8QR and its 10-15 minutes drive from Silverlake
